Programme Themes
Feasibility and Benefits
(economic, social, environmental and technical) of undertaking water loss reduction projects. Papers could address the benefi ts at either; a macro level, which entails considering the benefi ts and risks of deferring future infrastructure and the benefi ts of energy reduction through lower water use, or at a micro level, which entails, making decisions as to the course of action for a specific piece of infrastructure.
Performance Indicators and Best Practice
There are a myriad of performance indicators used by water loss practitioners and it is important to understand which indicators are required to evaluate feasibility at a macro level and which at a micro level. It would also be useful to be able to benchmark an organisation against international best practice. These indicators are also useful in quantifying the real and apparent losses and provide decision makers with some guidance as to where their organisation is losing water and money and where quick gains may be made.
Intervention Techniques
There are a variety of optionsavailable to fi nd leaks. This is where the real benefi ts in water loss reduction are gained and specifi c attention needs to be focused.
Sustainability
Success stories are important to help others achieve lower sustainable water losses. In certain areas regular interventions have not taken place resulting in leakage levels rising again. This may be due to a lack of skills or through the impact of restricted budgets. It is not only important to understand why projects fail but also for people to share their success stories.
